Master Shower Marble Tile in Columbine

Stunning gray cloud-pattern large-format marble tile shower with black rain head and glass door in Columbine

This master shower renovation in a Columbine home replaced a dated fiberglass unit with a fully tiled walk-in shower using large-format gray cloud-pattern porcelain marble-look tile. The walls were set with 24x48 tiles running vertically, which required very precise back-buttering to achieve the full mortar coverage needed to support tiles of this size without hollow spots. A liquid-applied waterproofing membrane (RedGard) was applied to all shower walls and the pre-sloped foam pan before any tile was set.

The black rain head and matte black valve trim were installed by the plumber before tile work began, with the valve body set at the correct depth to allow for tile thickness. We cut the valve escutcheon opening on the wet saw and sealed it with silicone. The glass enclosure was installed after tile and grout were complete.

What We Did

  1. Removed existing fiberglass shower unit; installed cement board on all walls and pre-sloped foam shower pan
  2. Applied two coats of liquid waterproofing membrane; sealed all corners with fabric mesh tape embedded in the membrane
  3. Set 24x48 wall tiles vertically with full back-butter coverage; cut all penetrations on wet saw
  4. Grouted walls and shower floor; applied silicone caulk at all inside corners and transitions

The finished shower transformed a dated master bath into a space that feels considered and well-made.
